Hantavirus Information & Resources

With an increase in the number Hantavirus cases so far this year, we want to provide you with some information that will remind you of precautions to take to prevent infection.

The best way to prevent a rodent infestation and contact with rodents is to remove food sources, water, and items that provide shelter for rodents. Additionally, please be mindful of your work areas, keeping them free of clutter, unnecessary papers, leftover food, and trash. This applies to spaces such as drawers, filing or storage cabinets, lounge areas, lockers, closets, lobbies and general spaces, etc.

Here are a few ways to eliminate possible rodent food sources from the work area AND home:
Keep food in thick plastic, glass or metal containers with tight lids.
Don’t leave opened food/snacks in lockers or work areas.
Clean up spilled food right away and wash dishes and utensils soon after use.
Always put pet food away after use and do not leave pet-food or water bowls out overnight.
Keep animal feed in thick plastic or metal containers with tight lids.
If storing trash and food waste inside the home, do so in rodent-proof containers.
Eliminate possible nesting sites outside the home. Elevate hay, woodpiles, and garbage cans at least 1 foot off the ground. Move woodpiles far away from the house (100 feet or more is best). Get rid of old trucks, cars, and old tires that mice could use as homes. Keep grass cut short and shrubbery within 100 feet of the home well-trimmed.
Seal up any openings into your home to help prevent entry into your living space.
