Surgical Technologist - Surgery
Position Summary: The Surgical Scrub Technician is responsible to provide age appropriate and culturally sensitive care to infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric perioperative patients. The goal of the scrub technician is to provide care that will achieve a level of wellness equal to or greater than that which the patient had before their operative or other invasive procedure. Duties are of considerable difficulty and based on a thorough knowledge of interrelatedness of body systems and the scrub techs ability to effectively interact with patients, their designated support person(s), and other healthcare team members, while maintaining current surgical technologist Practice Standards, AORN Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices. Abides by and actively supports RMCHCS' Christian Philosophy. The surgical scrub technician abides by Surgical Services policies and procedures in accordance with AORN's Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices and RMCHCS' policies and procedures relevant for operational objectives and activities to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The surgical scrub technician shares knowledge and skills through mentoring, precepting, role modeling, participation in peer interviews and evaluations, and by providing education and training on all equipment and all procedures, to maintain quality safe practices in the delivery of care for the perioperative patient in the Operating Room.
•High School diploma or GED required.
•Completion of course for Certified Operating Room Technician and in-house orientation and continued training.
•Previous experience as a Surgical Scrub Technician in a Hospital or Outpatient Surgical Unit preferred.
•Provides age appropriate and culturally sensitive care to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations in the Surgical Unit AORN's
•Evaluated based on the assessment of the Scrub Technicians ability to adhere to standards recommended practices and RMCHCS policy and guidelines during the care of peri-operative patients undergoing operative or invasive procedures.
•Duties are of considerable difficulty.
•Verbalizes correct procedure for initiation of the Code Blue procedure.
•Demonstrates ability to identify emergency situations and implement appropriate interventions.
•Verbalizes where to find emergency resuscitation device.
•Demonstrates ability to safely operate the following equipment:
•Operating Room table
•Steris system I or IE
•Demonstrates appropriate positioning techniques for surgical patients.
•Demonstrates proper transfer techniques when moving patients.
•Demonstrates using safety precautions for all patients.
•Demonstrates ability to assist keeping infants, children, receiving oxygen and/or IV therapy safe during and after procedures.
•Verbalizes when to use Standard Precautions.
•Verbalizes knowledge of isolation techniques.
•Licensure & Certifications:
•Maintain Certification for Operating Room Technician
•Current certification in Basic Life Support (if not current upon hire, must be obtained within three months of hire).
