Cardiopulmonary

RMCHCS's cardiopulmonary services department offers a comprehensive range of services in one location that includes respiratory and pulmonary diagnosis and care, cardiology services, cardiac rehabilitation and a sleep laboratory. The cardiopulmonary department is located on the second floor of this hospital.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program that helps improve the health and well-being of people who have heart problems. Rehab programs include exercise training, education on heart healthy living, and counseling to reduce stress and help patients return to an active live. For an appointment, call RMCHCS at 505-863-6862.

Cardiology Services

Board certified cardiologists are on-site Tuesdays and Thursdays and offer inpatient and outpatient cardiology consultations and follow-up care. Cardiology services, such as cardiac stress testing, nuclear stress testing, EKG, Holter monitoring and neurodiagnostic EEG or brainwave studies are also available. Cardiology services are provided by Cardiac Care Consultants who offer a continuum of care for patients who are transferred to Albuquerque for a higher level of care. For more information or to make an appointment, call 505-863-7301.

Pediatric Cardiology Services

Children with heart problems are seen by a pediatric cardiologist by referral from the child's primary care provider.

Pulmonary Services

RMCHCS' pulmonary provider works with patients suffering from chronic respiratory disease to reduce symptoms, decrease disability, increase participation in physical and social activities, and improve the overall quality of life. Pulmonary function testing is used to assess a patient's lung functioning.

Respiratory Therapy

The respiratory therapy department provides diagnostic and therapeutic modalities to assist providers in diagnosing and treating pulmonary disorders. Licensed respiratory therapists work with patients who have trouble breathing; for example, from a chronic respiratory disease, such as asthma or emphysema. They conduct tests to measure lung function and educate patients on how to manage asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder as well as other breathing disorders. RMCHCS' respiratory therapists work closely with the cardiology, pulmonology and sleep medicine providers to provide optimum services for patients. On staff is a certified neonatal pediatric respiratory specialist who is accredited by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association.

Smoking Cessation

Respiratory therapists provide smoking cessation information and intervention for patients who use tobacco or who have used tobacco within the last 12 months.

Sleep Disorder Center

RMCHCS's Sleep Disorder Center offers comprehensive care for patients, (both adult and pediatric) with sleep disordered breathing. Patients are referred to the Center by their primary care provider for an initial evaluation by Dr. Stefan Chimoskey who is board certified in sleep medicine. Patients are asked about symptoms, sleep history, medical history, and any other factors that may contribute to sleep disorders.

Sleep Study
If needed, the patient is scheduled for an overnight sleep study, which takes place in the Sleep Disorder Center, located on the second floor of the RMCH hospital. The patient's sleeping patterns are monitored during sleep and the patterns are studied and evaluated by experienced sleep technicians.

Following the sleep study, the patient will come in for a follow-up appointment to discuss the results of the study. Patients are shown their breathing patterns and how the pattern leads to hypoxemia and disrupted sleep. Treatment options are discussed and recommended. For many patients, the use of a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine is prescribed, the use of which offers the benefit of significantly better sleep.

Sleep study results are faxed to the primary care provider and patients return to the Sleep Disorder Center 4-6 weeks later for another follow-up appointment with Dr. Chimoskey to evaluate how they are doing.
